"Weird Al" Yankovic4.39B00000I023
Bad Hair Day
"Weird Al" Yankovic4.6B00000I02KThis CD serves up a mix of parodies and a batch of Yankovic originals. Weird Al's setting of Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise" in Amish country is inspired. What better way to send up the swaggering ways of hip-hop and contemporary R&B than to transpose them to this humble, traditionalist world? Yankovic turns U2's "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" into a song about an unpleasant visit to the dentist's office. Here drills, not deep feelings, cause screams. "The Alternative Polka," a medley of eleven mid-'90s alternative hits, drains the songs of any cool factor in five minutes flat. Listening to send-ups is like hearing two songs at once; the gap in tone cracks you up. It's fun to hear Weird Al deflate the cool attitudes, grandeur, and emotionalism of pop hits. Yankovic's generic originals, despite some funny ideas and lines, have limited appeal. —Fred Cisterna

311
3114.4B00005ABHHRazor-sharp guitars, hip-hop and funk rhythms, and healthy doses of ska and dance-hall reggae make this one of the most surprising albums to come out of the American heartland. But what's most remarkable about 311's breakthrough release is its enlightened attitude: In an otherwise terminally aggro style of music, where everyone strives to be harder than each other, 311 put down deadly weaponry on "Guns (Are for Pussies)." "Hive," meanwhile, disses hard drug use (but they're pro-hemp, of course), and "Misdirected Hostility" encourages, of all things, positivity ("All that angst sh*t is just cheesy"). Vocalist Nick Hexum and rapper Doug "S.A." Martinez trade lines with ease, and the band dexterously shifts gears between heavy tracks like "Down" and "Brodels," the frantic "Jackolantern's Weather," and the laid-back "All Mixed Up" and "Sweet." —Daniel Durchholz

Use Your Fingers
Bloodhound GangWhite rappers generally divide into two camps: the Beastie Boys disciples and the House of Pain clique. For the former, honky hip-hop has nothing to do with the African-American experiences that gave birth to the rap form; rather, it is borrowed to express the middle-class, often suburban, ennui that comes from too much pop culture and too much time on one's hands. In the latter, groups attempt to co-opt the Afrocentrism and identity worship from black rap and use it as a template for their own particular ethnic trumpeting—Irish, in HOP's case. On their debut album, Use Your Fingers, Bloodhound Gang make it clear which group they expect to be confused with: "No, I'm not the guy from the Beastie Boys!" yells Jimmy Pop (or is it his partner Daddy Long Legs?). Hailing from suburban Philadelphia, BG are a self-contained frat party dying to offend anyone who'll listen with their often hilarious, in-your-face political incorrectness. They fight for their right to be moronic throughout—whether worshiping Rip Taylor or invoking the Cavity Creeps from an old toothpaste ad. It's not all just fat-chick and cripple jokes, though: BG back up their obnoxious idiocy with some fairly wise musical maneuvering. While their age and background lead them to repeatedly mine the '80s for material—Duran Duran and Cure samples, Michael Jackson and Blondie interpolations, a "Kids in America" cover—their sly comments and ingenious a cappella snippets prove they're surprisingly sharp and able lads. —Roni Sarig

KMFDM4.12B000003RFHThis is an ideal KMFDM album for both the fan and the uninitiated alike. Led by mastermind Sasha Konietzko, the band's defining elements are on full display: staccato machine rhythms, languidly angry lead vocals, choruses of female backing vocals and lyrics full of vague calls to action. "Money" and "Sex on the Flag" are trademark KMFDM techno-metal with good guitar riffs, while "Help Us/Save Us ..." and "Bargeld" are imaginatively programmed and rigidly soulful. The adventurous "Spiritual House" and satirical "We Must Awaken" add diversity to the album's overall feel. Also included are alternate versions of some songs (including "I Will Pray," a version of the band's classic "Godlike"). —Mark McCleerey

Moby4.5B00000J6AGThose who have followed Moby's career are familiar by now with his deep convictions and spiritual connection. On his 1999 release, Play, he celebrates his faith in a masterful, unobtrusive way, channeling gospel and other inspirational samples through beats so earthy they could grow grass on a cement dance floor. It's impossible to separate the joy of the message from the joy of the grooves. —Beth Massa

Give Up - Deluxe 10th Anniversary Edition
The Postal ServiceB00BB5OLLMYou can spend all the time and money in the world trying to craft the perfect pop-music scenario, but sometimes the stars have to align all by themselves. Even though early on the members of The Postal Service jokingly referred to "Such Great Heights" as "the hit" on their debut album, Give Up, there s no way anyone could have predicted the eventual impact made by a mail-order album designed in a pair of West Coast bedrooms.

To celebrate the 10 year anniversary, Sub Pop is reissuing The Postal Service s sole album, and including in the multidisc set 15 bonus tracks, including two brand new songs, "A Tattered Line of String" and "Turn Around. " On top of that, the band is back together: The Postal Service will hit the road in 2013 for a long-overdue victory lap, giving most fans their first (and last seriously, don t ask) chance to see the group in person.

Of course, the band s music was more than just electro-pop, and the force with which Jimmy and Ben captured the indie-rock zeitgeist of the early aughts made them more of a phenomenon than just a regular old band. That such artists as Ben Folds, Amanda Palmer, Streetlight Manifesto, and Confide have covered "Such Great Heights" is a testament to both the song s magical spark and its melodic inclusivity. The band s sound is such a touchstone that "Postal Service-esque" has become a generally accepted musical adjective. And it goes way beyond Owl City.

While it was impossible to anticipate how massive Give Up would become, it was obvious in 2003 that these guys had made something special. Ten years on it s amazing to know that so many people have come to agree.

Supersexy Swingin' Sounds
White Zombie4.14B000000OVCRemix albums are often iffy propositions. Either the remixes add nothing to the originals, or veer off so unrecognizably that you wonder what made you want to hear the damn songs in the first place. Well, this disc—essentially a chopped 'n' channeled version of the Zombies' Astro-Creep 2000—deftly avoids both of those pitfalls, thanks in large part to the indelible freak-show presence of Rob Zombie. Some mixes, like those by house music whiz Mike "Hitman" Wilson and psychedelic rappers P.M. Dawn, push the envelope extensively, while industrial master John Fryer and the ubiquitous Dust Brothers just enhance the band's freak-show quintessence. Fans of the surreal should note the presence of a cover of K.C. & the Sunshine Band's "I'm Your Boogie Man." —David Sprague
